He was a good lad
Actor Trevor Bannister was best known for his role as Mr. Lucas, the hapless young junior salesman in the BBC sitcom Are You Being Served.
First broadcast in 1972, the series is still repeated on TV around the world today.
Trevor’s character spent his days endlessly pursuing his co-worker, Miss Brahms. With that sort of behaviour now deemed unacceptable in the modern workplace, Mr Lucas didn’t feature in the 2016 BBC reboot of the series, which featured a new generation of actors in the cast.
Are You Being Served had been planned as vehicle for rising star Bannister’s comedy talents, but as the series evolved, Mr. Lucas became just one of a number of unforgettable characters including Mollie Sugden’s Mrs. Slocombe and John Inman’s Mr. Humphries. Bannister left while the series was still popular in 1979, so as to free himself up for other roles.
At a time when others may think of retiring, a new TV role came along for Trevor when he was in his seventies. It saw him feature for seven years as golf club captain Toby Mulberry Smith, in Last of the Summer Wine.
