I decided long ago never to walk in anyone’s shadow

In 1985, an incredible new voice hit the charts. Everything about Whitney Houston’s hit I Wanna Dance With Somebody was lively and energetic, but it was that incredible voice that really blew everyone away.

Growing up singing gospel in church and the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick, Whitney’s first hit cemented her as legend in her own right.

In 1992, she achieved astonishing success with a song written by Dolly Parton I Will Always Love You, which accompanied Houston’s performance as a fictional pop star protected by Kevin Costner in box office smash The Bodyguard. The song dominated the number one spot in the charts for weeks on end.

The news of Whitney’s sudden and premature death in 2012 came as a deep shock to many, compounded by the death of her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown while still in her early twenties, three years later.

The life of Whitney Houston was not untroubled, but it is for her immense talent that she will always be remembered.
